Angels reach one-year deal with catcher

The Los Angeles Angels have reached a contract agreement with catcher Jeff Mathis, avoiding arbitration by settling on a one-year deal.
Mathis, whose defense and leadership behind the plate have played a big part in Los Angeles’ success in recent years, and the team agreed to a one-year, $1.7 million contract.
Mathis hit .195 with three homers and 18 RBIs in 2010, playing just 68 games while missing two months with a fractured right wrist. He has appeared in 333 games, all with the Angels, hitting .199 with 23 homers and 117 RBIs.
Six Los Angeles players remain eligible for arbitration.
